The commission request was to illustrate two important characters from the client’s in-progress novel series to show their growth from teenagers to adults throughout the series. The client provided specified character charts with Pinterest boards for their aesthetics and stylistic preferences. From this detailed brief, the selection of clothing, hairstyles, and poses were essential to accurately portray Dodie (left) and Jasper (right). The initial sketches were refined into full color illustrations to best represent these characters and inspire their author as they work on the novel.
The project was to develop a series of four stamps inspired by an artist born in Pennsylvania, a music genre, and an art movement. I choose P!nk with her specialty of Punk Pop and the Feminist Art Movement.
These selections unified well together, amplifying similar themes to make an impactful message for stamps and print advertising. To retain the rebellious, freedom driven intentions of Punk origins, the designs were handwritten on Procreate with textured brushes.
Saturated bright colors and strong contrasts notable in Guerrilla Girls works inspired the selection of the bright colors with a rich black.
Each of the songs empowers and challenge normative establishments. The lyrics are from “Just Like Fire”, “That’s All I Know So Far”, “What About Us?”, and “Irrelevant”.
After taking an animal personality test, the task was to create an animal with expressive markings of five adjectives that described oneself with traditional and digital media. My animal was a bear. I chose affectionate, detail-oriented, guarded, powerful, and whimsical.
I visualized each adjective into a corresponding pattern by using line, rhythm, and movement. I drew each shape of the bear with graphite and paper, then overlayed each digital pattern in Adobe Illustrator.
The eyes are from my favorite childhood teddy bear, a subtle choice to reinforce detail-oriented and whimsical. The strong stance of a bear and the cuddliness of a teddy bear emphasis the unity of these adjectives as a collective design.
