With the assignment to redesign three covers to create a cohesive, compelling series, Victoria Aveyard’s Red Queen collection featured an opportunity to reimagine the traditional blood-dripping crown covers to represent more narrative elements. The Red Queen depicts Mare Barrow navigating a world separated by blood—red and silver. When Mare is discovered with the ability to control lighting regardless of her red blood, she is thrown into the silver court, all the while trying to aid the Scarlet Guard, the ever-growing rebellion.
The design iterations evolved to represent the three main characters’ arcs throughout the series using playing cards as a motif to the growth of their identities. Traditional playing cards utilize red and black to create contrast between the four suits. To allude to the powers of the characters, the symbols are reflective of their power. The contrast of red and silver continues with the tension between the classes, which is complemented by the pull-out quotes relating to divinity and power. These design choices foreshadow details of the collective story. The Red Queen was first published in 2015 by HarperCollins.
